Description
Yucca gloriosa, commonly known as Spanish Dagger or Moundlily Yucca, is a striking evergreen perennial native to the southeastern United States, prized for its architectural form and drought tolerance. This yucca species features rosettes of stiff, sword-shaped, sharply pointed leaves that can grow up to 3 feet long, creating a dramatic, spiky silhouette ideal for xeriscaping and coastal gardens. In summer, it produces tall flower stalks adorned with creamy white, bell-shaped blooms that attract pollinators such as moths and hummingbirds, adding seasonal interest and ecological value. Historically valued by Native American communities for its fibers and edible parts, Yucca gloriosa has been cultivated extensively for its resilience in poor, sandy soils and tolerance to salt spray, making it a popular choice in challenging landscapes. Its low maintenance requirements and natural architectural beauty have earned it recognition among landscape professionals and garden enthusiasts alike, often recommended by institutions such as the Missouri Botanical Garden and NC State Extension for sustainable, low-water-use gardens.
