Description
Viburnum rhytidophyllum, commonly known as Leatherleaf Viburnum, is an evergreen shrub prized for its distinctive, deeply veined, leathery dark green leaves that provide year-round texture and color in the landscape. Native to China and introduced to Western gardens in the 19th century, this viburnum stands out for its large, strongly textured foliage and its dense, upright growth habit, making it an excellent choice for hedges, screens, or a bold specimen plant. In spring, it produces clusters of fragrant white flowers that attract pollinators, followed by blue-black berries in the fall that provide winter interest and wildlife value. The plant is notably tolerant of a range of soil types and urban conditions, showing resilience to drought and pollution, which has contributed to its popularity in both residential and commercial landscapes. Its combination of evergreen foliage, structural form, and seasonal interest distinguishes Leatherleaf Viburnum as a versatile and enduring landscape asset.
