Description
Viburnum plicatum var. tomentosum ‘Mariesii’, commonly known as Doublefile Viburnum, is a deciduous shrub prized for its striking horizontal branching habit that creates a layered, tiered effect reminiscent of a traditional Japanese garden aesthetic. Native to Japan and China, this variety is distinguished by its flat-topped clusters of fragrant white flowers that bloom in late spring, followed by glossy red berries that mature to black, attracting birds and wildlife. The deeply veined, dark green leaves turn a vibrant reddish-purple in the fall, adding multi-seasonal interest. ‘Mariesii’ is valued for its adaptability to a range of soil types and its tolerance of partial shade, making it a versatile choice for foundation plantings, hedges, or specimen use in temperate landscapes. This cultivar has been celebrated for its ornamental appeal and is often recommended by horticultural experts such as the Missouri Botanical Garden for its structural beauty and low maintenance requirements.
