Description
Viburnum plicatum var. tomentosum, commonly known as Doublefile Viburnum, is a deciduous shrub prized for its distinctive horizontal branching pattern that creates a layered, architectural form. Native to Japan and China, this species is celebrated for its stunning display of pure white lacecap flowers that bloom in late spring, followed by vibrant red to black berries that attract birds. The deeply veined, dark green leaves turn a rich burgundy in fall, adding multi-seasonal interest to the landscape. Its unique horizontal branching and layered habit set it apart from other viburnums, making it a favored choice for specimen planting or as a natural screen. Doublefile Viburnum is valued for its adaptability to various soil types and its tolerance for partial shade, thriving in USDA zones 5 through 8. Gardeners appreciate its low maintenance requirements and resistance to common pests and diseases. Recognized for its ornamental value, this viburnum variety is often highlighted in landscape design for its elegant form and extended seasonal interest.
