Description
Ulmus americana ‘Jefferson,’ commonly known as the Jefferson American Elm, is a disease-resistant cultivar of the classic American elm tree, prized for its graceful, vase-shaped form and lush, serrated green foliage that turns vibrant yellow in fall. Developed through the efforts of the U.S. National Arboretum and released in the early 2000s, this cultivar addresses the historical challenge of Dutch elm disease, which devastated native elm populations across North America. The Jefferson American Elm combines the traditional stately beauty and shade-providing qualities of Ulmus americana with improved resistance to pests and diseases, making it a favored choice for urban and suburban landscapes. Its strong wood and adaptability to various soil types contribute to its long-lasting landscape presence, while its striking silhouette enhances streetscapes, parks, and large garden settings. Recognized for its resilience and ornamental appeal, the Jefferson American Elm has become a symbol of restoration and sustainability in American horticulture.
