Description
Selaginella braunii, commonly known as Braun’s Arborvitae Fern, is a distinctive evergreen perennial native to Central America, particularly Costa Rica and Panama. This spikemoss species is celebrated for its lush, dense mat-forming growth and delicate, scale-like foliage that resembles miniature fern fronds, giving it a unique texture and fine detail in shaded garden settings. Its rich green coloration and feathery appearance make it an excellent choice for groundcover in moist, shaded areas where traditional ferns thrive. Selaginella braunii is well-regarded for its tolerance of low light and high humidity, making it suitable for woodland gardens, terrariums, and shaded borders. Historically, this species has been appreciated for its ornamental value due to its fine texture and evergreen nature, which provides year-round interest. It has also been recognized in horticultural circles for its versatility and ease of care in shade gardens.
