Description
Rosa woodsii, commonly known as Woods’ Rose, is a hardy native shrub esteemed for its ecological and ornamental value across North America. This deciduous rose typically grows 3 to 7 feet tall and is characterized by its arching branches, pinnately compound leaves, and fragrant pale pink to white flowers that bloom profusely in early summer. Adapted to a wide range of conditions from dry, rocky slopes to moist woodlands, Woods’ Rose plays a vital role in supporting local wildlife, providing nectar for pollinators and hips that feed birds and mammals. Historically, Indigenous peoples utilized its hips as a nutritious food source rich in vitamin C and its stems for crafting tools and cordage. Its resilience to drought and cold, combined with its natural beauty and wildlife benefits, make Rosa woodsii a valuable addition to native plant gardens and restoration projects, promoting biodiversity while requiring minimal maintenance.
