Description
Rhus lancea, commonly known as African Sumac, is an evergreen tree native to southern Africa, valued for its graceful, finely divided, fern-like foliage and its adaptability to a range of environmental conditions. This fast-growing, drought-tolerant species thrives in warm climates and is well-suited for urban landscapes due to its tolerance of poor soils, heat, and pollution. African Sumac typically reaches heights of 20 to 30 feet, forming a rounded canopy that provides excellent shade. Its pinnate leaves turn a vibrant yellow in the fall, adding seasonal interest. Historically, Rhus lancea has been used both for ornamental purposes and as a shade tree in parks and streetscapes, appreciated for its low-maintenance requirements. The tree also produces small clusters of greenish-yellow flowers, followed by dark berries that attract birds, contributing to biodiversity in garden settings. Its resilience and ornamental appeal have made it a popular choice in Mediterranean and subtropical landscape designs.
