Description
Rhododendron viscosum, commonly known as Swamp Azalea, is a deciduous azalea native to the eastern United States, thriving in wetland and swampy areas, which makes it uniquely suited for moist, acidic soils where many other azaleas struggle. This species is celebrated for its fragrant, tubular white to pale pink flowers that bloom in mid to late summer, providing a valuable nectar source for pollinators when few other shrubs are in flower. The plant typically grows 6 to 10 feet tall with a rounded, open habit and glossy, dark green leaves that turn yellow in fall, adding seasonal interest. Swamp Azalea is appreciated not only for its ornamental beauty and pleasant fragrance but also for its adaptability to damp environments and resistance to deer browsing. Its history dates back to early botanical explorations in North America, where it was documented as a valuable native shrub for garden and restoration use. This species has been recognized for contributing to native plant landscaping and wildlife habitat creation, valued by both gardeners and conservationists for its ecological benefits.
