Description
Rhododendron arborescens, commonly known as Smooth Azalea, is a deciduous native shrub prized for its elegant, trumpet-shaped white to pale pink flowers that bloom profusely in late spring to early summer. This species is distinguished by its smooth, hairless leaves and stems, setting it apart from other azaleas that often have fuzzy or pubescent foliage. Native to the eastern United States, particularly in moist, wooded areas and along stream banks, Smooth Azalea thrives in well-drained, acidic soils with partial shade, making it an excellent choice for naturalistic woodland gardens and rain gardens. Its fragrant blooms attract pollinators such as hummingbirds and butterflies, enhancing the ecological value of garden spaces. Recognized for its adaptability and ornamental appeal, Rhododendron arborescens contributes a graceful texture and seasonal interest to landscapes, embodying the charm and resilience of native azaleas appreciated by gardeners and conservationists alike.
