Description
Pyrus calleryana ‘Redspire’, commonly known as the Redspire Flowering Pear, is a popular ornamental tree prized for its attractive ornamental features and adaptability. Originating from China and introduced to the United States in the early 20th century, this cultivar is noted for its symmetrical pyramidal shape and glossy dark green foliage that transforms into vibrant shades of red and orange in the fall. In early spring, ‘Redspire’ produces a profusion of fragrant white flowers that create a striking floral display before leaf emergence. The tree is valued for its tolerance to urban conditions, including pollution and compacted soils, making it a favored choice for street and landscape plantings. Its dense branching provides effective screening and shade, while its moderate growth rate and manageable size make it suitable for small to medium-sized landscapes. The Redspire Flowering Pear has been recognized for its ornamental merit, receiving accolades from various horticultural societies as an outstanding urban and residential landscape tree.
