Description
Prunus x ‘Okame’, commonly known as Okame Flowering Cherry, is a hybrid ornamental cherry tree prized for its stunning early spring display of vibrant pink blossoms. Developed in Japan during the mid-20th century, this cultivar is a cross between Prunus incisa and Prunus campanulata, combining the hardiness and disease resistance of its parents with prolific floral beauty. The tree typically grows to a moderate height of 20 to 30 feet, featuring a graceful, upright spreading habit and glossy dark green leaves that turn brilliant shades of yellow and orange in the fall. Okame Cherry is valued for its early bloom period, often flowering weeks before many other cherries, which makes it a favorite for adding early-season color to landscapes and gardens. It thrives in full sun with well-drained soil and is relatively low-maintenance, making it suitable for both urban and suburban settings. Notably, the Prunus x ‘Okame’ has been recognized for its ornamental value and is frequently recommended by botanical institutions such as the Missouri Botanical Garden and NC State Extension for use in temperate climate gardens.
