Description
Physostegia virginiana ‘Miss Manners,’ commonly known as Obedient Plant, is a striking perennial native to North America, celebrated for its tall, upright spikes of tubular, lavender-pink flowers that bloom profusely in late summer to early fall. This cultivar is distinguished by its compact growth habit and well-behaved form, making it an excellent choice for borders and mixed perennial gardens. Known for its unique ability to hold its flowers in place when gently twisted—hence the name “obedient”—this plant adds both texture and vertical interest to landscapes. ‘Miss Manners’ thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils, showing good tolerance for wet conditions, making it valuable for naturalistic plantings and rain gardens. It is deer resistant and attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies, enhancing garden biodiversity. Developed through careful selection to improve upon the species’ tendency to spread aggressively, ‘Miss Manners’ offers gardeners a more manageable and refined version of the classic obedient plant, combining the species’ historic use in traditional North American gardens with modern landscape needs.
