Description
Penstemon digitalis, commonly known as Foxglove Beardtongue, is a native North American perennial celebrated for its elegant, tubular white flowers that often exhibit a subtle hint of pink, blooming from late spring to early summer. This upright, clump-forming plant typically reaches heights of 2 to 3 feet and features lance-shaped, medium-green foliage that transitions to an attractive yellow hue in the fall, adding seasonal interest. Valued for its adaptability to a range of soil types and its tolerance of drought once established, Foxglove Beardtongue thrives in full sun to partial shade and serves as a magnet for pollinators, including bees and hummingbirds, making it an excellent choice for naturalistic gardens, prairie restorations, and pollinator-friendly landscapes. Its distinctive “beardtongue” name derives from the tufts of white hairs found inside the flower’s throat, enhancing its unique appeal. As a hardy and low-maintenance plant with a history rooted in eastern and central North American ecosystems, Penstemon digitalis contributes both ecological benefits and refined beauty to perennial borders and mixed garden beds.
