Description
Myrica cerifera ‘Don’s Dwarf’ is a compact, evergreen shrub known for its dense, glossy blue-green foliage and aromatic qualities, making it an excellent choice for low hedges, foundation plantings, or container gardening. Originating from the native wax myrtle species common to the southeastern United States, ‘Don’s Dwarf’ is prized for its dwarf growth habit, reaching a manageable height of around 3 to 4 feet, which offers versatility in smaller landscapes without sacrificing the ruggedness and adaptability of the species. This cultivar thrives in a variety of soil types, tolerates salt spray and drought once established, and provides year-round interest with its fragrant leaves and small wax-coated berries that attract wildlife. The plant’s historical use by Native Americans for its waxy berries to make candles and as a medicinal herb adds to its unique cultural significance. ‘Don’s Dwarf’ has gained recognition for its combination of ornamental appeal and functional landscape use, making it a valued selection for sustainable gardening and naturalistic designs.
