Description
Maclura pomifera ‘White Shield’, commonly known as Osage Orange, is a distinctive cultivar of the native North American Osage Orange tree renowned for its dense, thorny branches and large, spherical fruit. This particular variety, ‘White Shield’, is prized for its unique pale to white-hued fruit, which sets it apart from the traditional bright green, bumpy fruit typical of the species. Historically, Osage Orange trees were valued by Native American tribes for their exceptionally strong wood, ideal for making bows, and later for use as natural fencing due to their thorny growth habit. The tree is highly adaptable, drought-tolerant, and thrives in a range of soil conditions, making it a resilient choice for windbreaks and hedgerows. Although primarily cultivated for its ornamental and practical uses, Maclura pomifera has gained recognition for its ecological benefits, providing habitat and food for wildlife. The ‘White Shield’ cultivar adds a unique aesthetic appeal to landscapes seeking a combination of functional and distinctive plant material.
