Description
Laurus nobilis ‘Saratoga,’ commonly known as Sweet Bay Laurel, is a distinguished cultivar of the aromatic evergreen tree native to the Mediterranean region, widely valued for its glossy, dark green leaves that are frequently used as a culinary herb. ‘Saratoga’ is noted for its compact, dense growth habit, making it well-suited for container gardening and formal hedges as well as landscape accents. This variety maintains the classic lance-shaped leaves with a rich fragrance that intensifies when crushed, offering both ornamental appeal and practical use in cooking. Historically, bay laurel has held cultural significance dating back to ancient Greece and Rome, where its leaves symbolized victory and honor. ‘Saratoga’ stands out for its improved vigor and adaptability in a range of climates, thriving particularly well in USDA zones 8-10 with well-drained soil and full to partial sun exposure. Its resilience to drought and relatively low maintenance needs have made it a favored choice among gardeners and landscapers seeking a versatile, fragrant evergreen.
