Description
Iva frutescens, commonly known as Marsh Elder, is a deciduous shrub native to coastal salt marshes along the eastern United States, prized for its exceptional tolerance to saline and wet conditions. This hardy plant typically grows up to 6 feet tall and features slender, aromatic leaves that provide a soft texture and attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies, making it an excellent choice for ecological restoration and wildlife gardens. Marsh Elder’s adaptability to brackish environments and its ability to stabilize soil make it a valuable species for shoreline erosion control and habitat improvement. Historically, it has been recognized for its role in coastal ecosystems, often thriving in challenging wetland habitats where few other shrubs can prosper. Its subtle but fragrant summer blooms contribute to its ornamental appeal, and its robustness in harsh conditions has garnered attention from conservationists and landscape professionals alike.
