Description
Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Semmes Beauty’ is a distinguished cultivar of the native Oakleaf Hydrangea, celebrated for its striking foliage and impressive floral display. This deciduous shrub features large, deeply lobed leaves reminiscent of oak leaves, which emerge green and transform into vibrant shades of red, burgundy, and purple in the fall, adding multi-seasonal interest to the landscape. In late spring to summer, it produces conical panicles of creamy white flowers that gradually age to pink, providing ornamental value and attracting pollinators. ‘Semmes Beauty’ is known for its vigorous growth, excellent disease resistance, and adaptability to a range of soil conditions, thriving best in partial shade with moist, well-drained soil. This cultivar exemplifies the charm and resilience of native southeastern U.S. flora, making it a popular choice for naturalistic gardens, woodland borders, and foundation plantings. The Oakleaf Hydrangea species has been appreciated since the 18th century for its unique leaf texture and extended bloom period, and ‘Semmes Beauty’ continues this legacy with enhanced ornamental qualities recognized by horticultural enthusiasts and professionals alike.
