Description
Hydrangea arborescens ‘Annabelle,’ commonly known as Smooth Hydrangea, is a beloved deciduous shrub prized for its large, globe-shaped clusters of pure white flowers that bloom from early to mid-summer. Originally native to the eastern United States, this cultivar was introduced in the mid-20th century and has since become a staple in both traditional and contemporary landscapes due to its reliable bloom performance and adaptability. Unique for its ability to thrive in a variety of soil types and light conditions—from full sun to partial shade—’Annabelle’ is also noted for its strong stems that support its sizeable flower heads, minimizing the need for staking. The foliage is a vibrant green that provides a lush backdrop to the striking blooms, which eventually age to a soft greenish hue, adding seasonal interest. This hydrangea is valued not only for ornamental use in garden beds and borders but also for its excellent cut flower qualities. Recognized for its exceptional garden performance, ‘Annabelle’ has been awarded for its ornamental value and remains a favorite choice for gardeners seeking a hardy, low-maintenance flowering shrub with impressive visual impact.
