Description
Hosta ‘Halcyon’, commonly known as Plantain Lily, is a popular and classic shade-loving perennial cherished for its striking blue-gray foliage that adds a cool, serene tone to garden landscapes. This variety features thick, slightly corrugated leaves with a smooth texture and rounded heart shape, creating a dense, low-growing mound that typically reaches 16-18 inches in height. Originating from a 1950s introduction by the esteemed hosta hybridizer Harold Greer, ‘Halcyon’ has become a staple in shade gardens due to its excellent vigor, drought tolerance, and resistance to slug damage. The plant produces lavender, funnel-shaped flowers in summer that rise above the foliage on slender stalks, attracting pollinators such as bees and hummingbirds. Its unique blue foliage color remains stable throughout the growing season, making it a standout among hosta cultivars. Recognized for its garden performance and ornamental appeal, Hosta ‘Halcyon’ continues to be a preferred choice for landscapers and home gardeners seeking reliable, low-maintenance shade plants.
