Description
Hosta ‘Fire and Ice’ is a striking cultivar of the popular shade-loving plantain lily, celebrated for its vibrant and dramatic foliage. This hosta features bold, heart-shaped leaves with a creamy white center sharply contrasted by deep green margins, creating a vivid “fire and ice” visual effect that adds texture and brightness to shady garden spots. Originating from hybridization efforts in the late 20th century, this variety combines vigorous growth with excellent disease resistance, making it a reliable choice for both novice and experienced gardeners. ‘Fire and Ice’ typically thrives in partial to full shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils, making it ideal for woodland gardens or shaded borders. Revered for its ornamental value, the plant produces lavender to pale violet flowers during mid-summer, attracting pollinators such as bees. Its unique variegation and adaptability have earned it recognition among hosta enthusiasts and landscape professionals, often cited in major horticultural sources for its standout foliage and garden versatility.
