Description
Heuchera americana, commonly known as Coral Bells, is a native North American perennial prized for its striking foliage and delicate bell-shaped flowers. This species is characterized by its mounding habit and rounded, lobed leaves that can vary in color from bright green to deep purple, often with a slightly ruffled texture, providing year-round ornamental appeal. Blooming in late spring to early summer, the plant produces airy spikes of tiny, bell-like flowers in shades of pink or coral, which attract pollinators such as hummingbirds and bees. Heuchera americana thrives in partial shade to full sun and prefers well-drained, humus-rich soil, making it an excellent choice for woodland gardens, borders, and rock gardens. Its adaptability to various soil types and resistance to deer and drought contribute to its popularity among gardeners. Recognized for its ornamental value and versatility, Heuchera americana has been foundational in breeding numerous cultivars with enhanced foliage colors and patterns, solidifying its place as a beloved perennial in American horticulture.
