Description
Hamamelis virginiana, commonly known as Common Witch Hazel, is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to eastern North America, celebrated for its distinctive late fall to early winter blooming period when most other plants have entered dormancy. This species features unique, strap-like yellow flowers with crinkled petals that emerge on bare branches, providing vibrant color and fragrance during cooler months. Witch Hazel’s broad, oval leaves turn a striking yellow in autumn, adding seasonal interest. Historically, Native American tribes utilized witch hazel for its medicinal properties, extracting astringent compounds from its bark and leaves, a practice that continues today in natural skincare and healing products. Witch Hazel is valued for its adaptability to various soil types and its tolerance for shade, making it a versatile addition to woodland gardens and naturalized landscapes. Recognized for its ornamental and ecological benefits, Hamamelis virginiana is a prized plant for late-season interest and wildlife support.
