Description
Cotoneaster divaricatus, commonly known as Spreading Cotoneaster, is a versatile and hardy deciduous shrub prized for its graceful, arching branches and dense, spreading habit, making it an excellent groundcover or low hedge. Native to northern China, this species has been widely cultivated in North America and Europe for its ornamental appeal, characterized by small, glossy dark green leaves that turn vibrant shades of red and orange in autumn. In late spring to early summer, it produces clusters of small, white to pinkish flowers that attract pollinators, followed by bright red berries that persist into winter, providing vital food for birds. Known for its adaptability to various soil types and urban conditions, Spreading Cotoneaster is drought-tolerant and requires minimal maintenance, enhancing its popularity in landscape design. The plant’s unique ability to combine aesthetic appeal with functional erosion control and wildlife support has earned it recognition among gardeners and landscape professionals.
