Description
Conocarpus erectus, commonly known as Button Mangrove, is a versatile coastal shrub or small tree native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, including the Caribbean and the coastal plains of Florida. Renowned for its dense, rounded canopy and distinctive button-like fruit clusters, this species thrives in saline environments, making it an excellent choice for erosion control and habitat restoration in coastal landscapes. The Button Mangrove exhibits glossy, dark green leaves that may vary to a silver-gray hue in some cultivars, providing year-round visual interest. Its ability to tolerate salt spray, poor soils, and periodic flooding underscores its ecological importance in stabilizing shorelines while supporting diverse wildlife. Historically, Conocarpus erectus has been used in traditional medicine and as a windbreak in tropical communities. Although not widely recognized by major horticultural awards, its resilience and adaptability have made it a valued plant in coastal and wetland restoration projects.
