Description
Coleus scutellarioides ‘UF0646’, commonly known as Redhead Coleus, is a striking ornamental foliage plant prized for its vibrant and richly colored leaves in varying shades of red, burgundy, and deep purple. Originating from tropical regions of Southeast Asia and Africa, coleus has been cultivated for centuries due to its adaptability and vivid foliage rather than its flowers. ‘Redhead’ is a cultivar developed through selective breeding to enhance its intense red hues and ensure robust growth in a variety of garden settings, including shaded beds, containers, and mixed borders. This variety is known for its fast growth, compact habit, and excellent heat tolerance, making it a popular choice for adding bold color contrast in landscapes. As a cultivar developed by the University of Florida, it benefits from the institution’s rigorous breeding programs aimed at improving ornamental traits and garden performance. Coleus plants like ‘Redhead’ thrive in partial shade but can tolerate full sun with adequate moisture, and they are widely appreciated for their low maintenance and versatility.
