Description
Chitalpa tashkentensis, commonly known as Chitalpa, is a deciduous hybrid tree originating from a cross between the desert-adapted Catalpa and the hardy, drought-tolerant Chilopsis linearis (desert willow). Developed in Uzbekistan during the 1960s, this fast-growing tree is prized for its graceful, willow-like foliage and abundant trumpet-shaped flowers that bloom profusely from late spring through summer in shades of white, pink, or lavender with subtle markings. Chitalpa is uniquely suited to hot, arid climates and is highly resistant to heat and drought, making it an excellent choice for water-wise landscapes. Its broad, rounded canopy provides light shade, while its low-maintenance nature and tolerance for a variety of soil types contribute to its popularity in urban and suburban settings. Chitalpa’s ornamental appeal and adaptability have earned it recognition among landscape professionals, highlighting its value as both a street tree and a garden specimen.
