Description
Chaenomeles x superba ‘Cameo,’ commonly known as Flowering Quince, is a striking deciduous shrub prized for its early spring blooms and ornamental appeal. This hybrid, derived from crosses between Chaenomeles species native to East Asia, showcases vibrant, glossy foliage and profuse, cup-shaped flowers in shades of coral-pink to red, often appearing before the leaves fully emerge. Its dense, thorny branches make it an excellent choice for natural hedges and wildlife habitat, while its adaptability to various soil types and resistance to pests and diseases contribute to its popularity in landscapes. Historically, Flowering Quince has been cultivated for centuries both as an ornamental and for its fruit, which, though tart, is sometimes used in preserves. ‘Cameo’ is particularly appreciated for its compact growth habit and intense flower color, making it a standout selection for early-season color in garden settings. This cultivar’s enduring appeal has been recognized by horticultural societies for its reliable performance and ornamental value.
