Description
Cercis canadensis ‘JN16’ Black Pearl™ Eastern Redbud is a distinctive cultivar of the native Eastern Redbud, renowned for its striking deep purple to nearly black foliage that provides dramatic contrast in the landscape. This deciduous small tree or large shrub typically grows 15 to 20 feet tall and wide, featuring an open, rounded habit that adds architectural interest throughout the seasons. In spring, it produces abundant clusters of vibrant magenta-pink pea-shaped flowers that emerge directly on the dark branches before the leaves, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies. The Black Pearl™ cultivar is valued not only for its ornamental foliage and floral display but also for its adaptability to a wide range of soil types and urban conditions, thriving in full sun to part shade. Its unique dark leaf color offers a bold alternative to traditional green-leafed redbuds, making it a popular choice for landscape designers seeking contrast and year-round appeal. This cultivar has been recognized for its garden performance and aesthetic value, earning accolades for its distinctive foliage and consistent flowering habit.
