Description
Artemisia frigida, commonly known as Prairie Sagewort, is a hardy, low-growing perennial native to the prairies and dry regions of North America, valued for its finely divided, silver-gray foliage that adds a soft, silvery texture to landscapes. This drought-tolerant plant thrives in well-drained, sandy or rocky soils and is highly adaptable to harsh conditions, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and erosion control. Prairie Sagewort is not only prized for its ornamental qualities but also for its historical uses by Indigenous peoples who utilized it for medicinal purposes and as a fragrant herb. Its aromatic leaves release a pleasant, sage-like scent when crushed, attracting pollinators while deterring certain pests. Artemisia frigida’s resilience and unique silvery appearance have made it a beloved component in native plant gardens and naturalized areas, promoting biodiversity and sustainable gardening practices.
