Description
Alpinia zerumbet, commonly known as Shell Ginger, is a striking tropical perennial native to East Asia, prized for its lush, arching foliage and distinctive, fragrant flowers that resemble seashells. This plant features large, lance-shaped leaves with variegated patterns of green and cream that add a bold architectural element to gardens and landscapes. Shell Ginger produces elegant, pendulous clusters of white to pale pink flowers with red markings, which emerge in late summer and attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Historically, Alpinia zerumbet has been valued in traditional medicine and culinary uses across its native range, while in horticulture, it is admired for its ability to thrive in warm climates with partial shade and well-drained soil. Its versatility as both an ornamental specimen and a natural privacy screen has made it a popular choice in subtropical and tropical gardens worldwide. Recognized for its ornamental appeal and low maintenance, Shell Ginger has been featured in various botanical collections and landscape designs.
