Description
Alnus serrulata, commonly known as Smooth Alder, is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to eastern North America, thriving in moist, wetland environments such as stream banks and swamps. Recognized for its serrated, dark green leaves and smooth gray bark, this species plays a vital ecological role by stabilizing soil and improving water quality through nitrogen fixation, a unique trait among alders. Its catkins appear in early spring before leaf-out, providing an important pollen source for pollinators. Historically, Native American communities utilized Smooth Alder for medicinal purposes and as a natural dye. The plant’s adaptability to wet conditions and its ability to enhance habitat diversity make it a valuable addition to naturalized landscapes and restoration projects. Its robust growth and environmental benefits have contributed to its recognition among conservationists and landscape professionals.
