Description
Agave americana, commonly known as the Century Plant, is a striking succulent native to Mexico and the southwestern United States, renowned for its dramatic rosette of thick, fleshy, blue-green leaves edged with sharp spines and tipped with a distinctive terminal spine. This drought-tolerant succulent is celebrated for its architectural form and resilience in xeriscaping and desert gardens. The Century Plant is perhaps best known for its remarkable life cycle: it may take several decades to mature and bloom only once, producing a towering flower spike that can reach up to 20 feet tall before the plant dies, a characteristic that has fascinated gardeners and botanists alike. Historically, Agave americana has been utilized for its fibers, sap, and ornamental value, and it plays an important role in traditional Mexican culture and agriculture. Its dramatic presence and low maintenance needs have earned it a place in many landscape designs emphasizing sustainability and bold texture.
