Description
Acer saccharum ssp. nigrum ‘Green Column’, commonly known as the Black Maple ‘Green Column’, is a distinctive cultivar of the native North American Black Maple, prized for its upright, columnar growth habit that makes it an excellent choice for narrow spaces and formal landscapes. This tree typically features deeply lobed, dark green leaves that turn vibrant shades of golden yellow in the fall, offering striking seasonal interest. Originating from the natural variation of the Black Maple subspecies of the iconic Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum), ‘Green Column’ combines the exceptional fall color and adaptability of its species with a more compact, vertical form, making it suitable for urban planting where space is limited. The Black Maple itself has a rich history as a valuable hardwood tree native to the Midwest and Eastern United States, known for its high-quality timber and sap used in maple syrup production. ‘Green Column’ is appreciated for its tolerance to various soil types and urban conditions, including moderate drought and pollution, enhancing its versatility in landscape design. Its upright silhouette and rich autumn hues have earned it recognition in landscape trade circles, making it a favored selection for creating structured, seasonal displays.
