Description
Chaenomeles x superba ‘Texas Scarlet,’ commonly known as Texas Scarlet Flowering Quince, is a striking deciduous shrub valued for its vibrant, scarlet-red blossoms that herald the arrival of early spring. This hybrid quince, developed from crosses between Japanese flowering quince species, showcases a dense, thorny growth habit that makes it an excellent choice for naturalistic hedges and wildlife-friendly gardens. Its glossy, dark green leaves provide attractive summer foliage, while its bright red flowers bloom profusely on bare branches before leaf emergence, creating a vivid display that attracts pollinators such as bees. Historically, flowering quinces have been cultivated in East Asia for centuries, prized both for their ornamental beauty and their hardy, adaptable nature. ‘Texas Scarlet’ is especially noted for its vigorous growth and remarkable disease resistance, making it a favorite in temperate landscapes. The cultivar has earned recognition from horticultural societies for its dependable, early spring color and landscape versatility.
