Description
Ilex x ‘Sparkleberry’ Winterberry is a striking deciduous holly hybrid known for its vibrant red berries that persist through winter, providing outstanding seasonal interest and a valuable food source for birds. This cultivar is a cross between Ilex verticillata and Ilex decidua, combining the best traits of its parent species to produce a compact, rounded shrub with glossy green leaves that turn yellow before dropping in late fall. Its dense branching and abundant berry display make it an excellent choice for winter landscapes, wildlife gardens, and naturalized settings. Originating from breeding programs focused on enhancing berry retention and plant hardiness, ‘Sparkleberry’ has gained popularity for its reliable fruiting and adaptability to wet or acidic soils typical of eastern North America. This cultivar has been recognized by horticultural societies for its ornamental value and wildlife benefits, making it a favored selection among native plant enthusiasts and sustainable landscape designers.
