Description
Sansevieria zeylanica, commonly known as Bowstring Hemp, is a hardy, evergreen succulent native to tropical West Africa, prized for its striking, upright sword-shaped leaves that feature dark green horizontal bands on a lighter green background. Known for its drought tolerance and low maintenance, this plant thrives in bright, indirect light but can also adapt to lower light conditions, making it an ideal choice for both indoor and outdoor landscapes. Its unique architectural form adds a sculptural element to gardens and interiors, while its ability to improve indoor air quality by filtering toxins has contributed to its popularity. Historically, Bowstring Hemp was valued for its fibrous leaves, which were traditionally harvested for rope and bowstrings, a trait reflected in its common name. This species is a member of the Dracaenaceae family and has often been cultivated as a symbol of resilience and longevity. Though not widely awarded, Sansevieria zeylanica continues to be celebrated by plant enthusiasts and interior designers for its combination of aesthetic appeal and functional toughness.
