Description
Aloe arborescens, commonly known as Candelabra Aloe, is a striking succulent native to southern Africa renowned for its sculptural, multi-branched growth habit that resembles a candelabra. This evergreen shrub typically reaches heights of 6 to 10 feet, featuring thick, fleshy, lance-shaped leaves with serrated edges that form dense rosettes. In cooler months, vibrant tubular red to orange flowers bloom atop tall stalks, attracting hummingbirds and pollinators, and adding fiery color to landscapes. The plant thrives in well-drained soils with full sun to partial shade and is highly drought-tolerant, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and Mediterranean-style gardens. Historically, Aloe arborescens has been valued not only for its ornamental appeal but also for its traditional medicinal uses, especially in skin healing and anti-inflammatory applications. It is frequently utilized in erosion control and as a natural barrier due to its dense and robust form. This aloe’s distinctive architectural form and adaptability have earned it recognition among gardeners seeking resilient, low-maintenance, and visually impactful plants.
