Description
Rhus glabra var. cismontana, commonly known as Smooth Sumac, is a deciduous shrub native to western North America, particularly thriving in dry, rocky soils and open woodlands. This variety of Smooth Sumac is distinguished by its smooth, hairless leaves and stems, in contrast to other sumac species, giving it a sleek and refined appearance. The plant features pinnate leaves composed of multiple lance-shaped leaflets that turn vibrant shades of red and orange in the fall, providing striking seasonal interest. In late summer to early fall, it produces dense clusters of small greenish-yellow flowers that mature into bright red, fuzzy fruit clusters, which persist into winter and serve as an important food source for birds and wildlife. Historically, Native American tribes utilized various parts of the Smooth Sumac for medicinal purposes and as a natural dye. Its adaptability to poor soils and drought tolerance makes it a valuable choice for erosion control and low-maintenance landscaping. Recognized for its ecological benefits and ornamental appeal, Smooth Sumac contributes significantly to native plant gardens and habitat restoration projects.
