Description
Phlox stolonifera ‘Sherwood Purple’, commonly known as Creeping Phlox, is a charming groundcover prized for its vibrant purple flowers and lush, evergreen foliage. This perennial is native to the woodlands of the eastern United States and is valued for its ability to spread via stolons, creating a dense mat that helps control erosion and suppress weeds. ‘Sherwood Purple’ stands out with its rich, deep purple blooms that typically appear in mid to late spring, offering a striking contrast against its glossy green leaves. Its trailing habit makes it ideal for rock gardens, slopes, and as a border plant, where it provides both color and texture. Phlox stolonifera historically has been appreciated for its hardiness and adaptability to shady or partially shaded environments, thriving in well-drained, humus-rich soils. The cultivar ‘Sherwood Purple’ is noted for its vigorous growth and extended bloom period compared to other native phlox species, making it a favorite among gardeners seeking long-lasting spring color.
