Description
Cupaniopsis anacardioides, commonly known as Carrotwood, is an evergreen tree native to the coastal regions of eastern Australia, prized for its dense foliage and adaptability in landscape use. This fast-growing species typically reaches heights of 20 to 30 feet, featuring glossy, dark green, pinnate leaves with a subtle carrot-like scent when crushed, which contributes to its common name. Carrotwood produces small, creamy-green flowers in spring, followed by attractive, orange to reddish capsules that attract birds, enhancing its ecological value as a wildlife-friendly plant. Its tolerance to coastal conditions, including salt spray and wind, makes it an excellent choice for maritime landscapes and urban screens. Historically, the tree has been valued both for ornamental purposes and as a natural privacy barrier. Carrotwood is appreciated for its moderate maintenance needs and resilience in various soil types, making it a versatile landscape tree in warm temperate to subtropical climates.
