Description
Magnolia virginiana ‘Green Shadow,’ commonly known as Sweetbay Magnolia, is a distinctive cultivar prized for its elegant, glossy evergreen foliage and fragrant creamy-white, tulip-shaped flowers that bloom from late spring through summer. Native to the southeastern United States, this tree or large shrub thrives in wetland habitats, reflecting its natural affinity for moist, acidic soils and adaptability to both full sun and partial shade. ‘Green Shadow’ is particularly valued for its compact, dense growth habit and enhanced cold tolerance compared to native forms, making it a versatile choice for landscapes seeking year-round greenery and seasonal floral interest. Historically, Sweetbay Magnolias have been appreciated by Native American cultures and early settlers for their aromatic qualities and ornamental appeal. This cultivar’s refined structure and resilience have earned it recognition among gardeners and landscape professionals looking for a native plant that combines beauty with ecological benefits, such as providing habitat and nectar for pollinators.
