Description
Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Pee Wee’ Oakleaf Hydrangea is a compact, dwarf cultivar prized for its distinctive oak-shaped leaves and stunning multi-season interest. Native to the southeastern United States, this deciduous shrub features large, conical white flower panicles that bloom in early summer and gradually age to pink, providing a prolonged floral display. Unique among hydrangeas, ‘Pee Wee’ offers striking fall foliage that transitions from green to rich shades of burgundy, red, and purple, adding vibrant color to the landscape well into autumn. Its smaller stature, typically reaching 3 to 4 feet in height, makes it ideal for limited spaces, containers, or as an accent plant in mixed borders. The oakleaf hydrangea was first introduced to cultivation in the 19th century and has since become a favorite for its adaptability, tolerance to partial shade and drier soils compared to other hydrangea species, and its resistance to common pests and diseases. ‘Pee Wee’ has been recognized for its superior garden performance and is celebrated among gardeners for combining the beauty of traditional oakleaf hydrangeas with a more manageable size, making it a standout choice for ornamental landscaping.
