Description
Liquidambar styraciflua, commonly known as American Sweetgum, is a deciduous tree native to the southeastern United States and parts of Mexico and Central America. Renowned for its distinctive star-shaped leaves that turn vibrant shades of red, orange, and purple in the fall, Sweetgum adds striking seasonal interest to landscapes. This tree is also characterized by its unique spiky, spherical fruit capsules—often called “gum balls”—which persist through winter and provide texture and wildlife habitat. Historically, Sweetgum has been valued not only for its ornamental appeal but also for its resin, historically used for medicinal purposes and as a source of fragrant balsam. Its adaptability to a range of soil types and its tolerance of urban conditions make it a popular choice for shade and street trees. Sweetgum’s combination of ornamental foliage, interesting fruit, and adaptability has earned it recognition in various horticultural circles for landscape versatility and autumn color display.
