Illicium floridanum ‘JCJC’ Miss Scarlett® Florida Anise is a striking evergreen shrub native to the southeastern United States, prized for its rich, dark burgundy foliage that adds dramatic color and texture to shade gardens. This cultivar showcases large, star-shaped leaves with a glossy finish, offering a unique visual appeal that sets it apart from typical green-leafed varieties. Known for its resilience in shady, moist environments, Miss Scarlett® thrives in well-drained soils and exhibits a compact, upright growth habit, making it an excellent choice for understory plantings or as a bold accent in mixed borders. Historically, Illicium floridanum has been valued for its aromatic qualities, with its name stemming from the licorice-like scent of its foliage and seeds, used traditionally in folk remedies. ‘Miss Scarlett®’ was selected and introduced by plant breeders to enhance ornamental traits such as leaf color intensity and plant vigor, reflecting modern horticultural efforts to diversify native landscaping options.
