Description
Iris virginica, commonly known as Southern Blue Flag, is a native North American iris prized for its striking blue to violet flowers and its adaptability to wetland and moist garden environments. This perennial species is characterized by its tall, slender green foliage and elegant, three-petaled blooms that often feature delicate veining and a yellow signal mark at the base of each petal, providing a vivid contrast. Historically, Southern Blue Flag has been utilized in naturalized wet meadows and along stream banks, where it supports local wildlife and enhances ecological diversity. Its ability to thrive in saturated soils makes it an exceptional choice for rain gardens and water-edge plantings. Recognized for both its ornamental beauty and ecological value, Iris virginica embodies a blend of wild charm and durability that has secured its place in native plant gardens and restoration projects across the southeastern United States.
