Description
Ilex verticillata ‘Winter Red’ ®, commonly known as Winterberry Holly, is a deciduous holly native to North America, prized for its vibrant red berries that persist into winter, providing striking color and valuable wildlife habitat during the colder months. This cultivar is especially noted for its upright, rounded form and dense branching, which supports an abundant display of glossy red fruit that emerges on female plants following spring pollination by male cultivars. ‘Winter Red’ ® is favored for its adaptability to wet soils and tolerance of full sun to partial shade, making it an excellent choice for naturalized landscapes, rain gardens, and winter interest in temperate zones. Historically, Winterberry has been used by indigenous peoples for medicinal purposes and has become a staple in holiday décor due to its festive berries. Its ornamental appeal and ecological benefits make it a standout selection for sustainable gardening.
