Description
Platanus x acerifolia ‘Bloodgood’, commonly known as the London Planetree, is a robust and fast-growing deciduous tree prized for its distinctive exfoliating bark that reveals a patchwork of cream, green, and brown hues, adding year-round visual interest to landscapes. This hybrid between the American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) and the Oriental plane tree (Platanus orientalis) originated in the mid-19th century in London, where it was cultivated to withstand urban pollution and challenging growing conditions, making it a popular shade tree in city environments worldwide. ‘Bloodgood’ is especially valued for its large, maple-like leaves that turn a vibrant yellow in fall, its tolerance to drought, compacted soils, and air pollution, and its resistance to anthracnose disease compared to other plane trees. Its broad, arching canopy provides excellent shade, making it a favored choice for streetscapes, parks, and large gardens. The London Planetree has been widely recognized for its adaptability and contribution to urban forestry, cementing its status as a cornerstone species in temperate urban landscaping.
