Description
Clethra alnifolia ‘Hummingbird’ Summersweet is a compact and highly ornamental deciduous shrub prized for its fragrant, bottlebrush-like spikes of white flowers that bloom in mid to late summer, attracting pollinators such as bees and, notably, hummingbirds. Native to the eastern United States, this cultivar is valued for its adaptability to moist, acidic soils and its tolerance of partial shade, making it an excellent choice for woodland gardens, rain gardens, or naturalized landscapes. Unique among summersweets, ‘Hummingbird’ stays more compact and rounded, reaching about 3 to 5 feet in height, which suits smaller garden spaces while still providing the species’ signature sweet fragrance. In addition to its summer blooms, the glossy green foliage often turns golden-yellow in fall, adding seasonal interest. Recognized for its pollinator-friendly qualities and garden versatility, Clethra alnifolia ‘Hummingbird’ continues to be a favored selection among native plant enthusiasts and professional landscapers alike.
